Seriously, what can be more fun than finding your way after getting lost in the woods. Come have a super fantastic day in the woods honing your map and compass skills for that day you really are lost.
DANGEROUS ANIMALS: We'll have some skill development and then get to race through the woods trying to find those elusive control markers without getting trapped in quick sand, swamps, brambles, or briars, OR eaten by bears, bobcats, cougars, foxes, fishers or even rabid squirrels or the dreaded chipmunk. 'Course you'll probably make so much noise running through the woods that there won't be any wildlife within a mile of you.
NEW MAP: We'll be getting to use the brand new map of the Harris Center land produced last year for the US Orienteering Competition that we missed when we were at the NH Jamboree.
UNO (Up North Orienteers) will be helping us with this awesome event.
MERIT BADGE: Want to also earn Orienteering Merit Badge? You can complete a number of requirements on this day with a little preparation! OH!!! Don't forget - First Class Requirements 1a: Demonstrate how to find directions during the day and at night without using a compass. 1b: Using a map and compass, complete an orienteering course that covers at least one mile and requires measuring the height and/or width of designated items (tree, tower, canyon, ditch, etc.). Easy Peasy at this incredible day!
DON'T BE A CANNIBAL:__ Courses will be run with buddies, so start picking your buddy. Choose wisely and bring a compass. It can be awkward having to eat your buddy, because you became hopelessly lost and have run out of food.
FOOD: Bring a sack lunch, snacks, water, rain gear, compass, essentially your 10 essentials! You'll probably want some old nasty sneakers or waterproof boots as well. April 2, could be a bit damp in the middle of MUD SEASON!
