Welcome to Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills training. The Introduction to Outdoor Leader Skills (IOLS) course builds and expands on the concepts and themes introduced in Scoutmaster Position-Specific Training and Varsity Coach Position-Specific Training, and provides Scouters with the confidence to take youth into the outdoors. Specifically, this hands-on program gives adult leaders a practical introduction to the patrol method of a boy-led troop by teaching many of the practical outdoor skills they need to lead Scouts in the out-of-doors. In addition, the teaching methods, activities, and games model the variety of teaching used in effective and engaging Scouting programs.
This hands-on course covers basic outdoor skills, including wood tools, ropes and lashings, nature identification, Leave No Trace, cooking, camp set-up, fire building, map and compass, hiking, flags, and campfire programs. It will prepare you to teach all the outdoor requirements through First Class.
Cost: $30/person includes course materials, lunch, supper, and cracker barrel on Saturday and breakfast on Sunday.
Bring: Wear your uniform and bring your own tent, sleeping gear, water bottle, chair, cup, plate, eating utensils, and basic camping gear.
